The month of May it's finally here, and we are super excited because May is Better Hearing and Speech Month (BHSM).

What is Better Hearing and Speech Month?

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) dedicates the month of May to raising public awareness about communication health.

ASHA created this unique event in 1927 to raise awareness, promote understanding of communication disorders and celebrate the key role professionals of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in speech and hearing disorders.

Yes, SLPs and SLPAs are true ROCKSTARS! And along with raising awareness, we would like to spend some quality time giving you (and ourselves as an SLP-owned and runned company) a pat on the back and recognition for changing lives.

Why is BHSM so important?

As the world is navigating through global health crises and we are physically separated from one another, communication becomes more important than ever!

Many of us take communication for granted, but our ability to speak, hear, and be heard, is more significant than many realize. For those who have speech or hearing challenges, everyday communication can be a considerable challenge.

A communication disorder is an impairment in our ability to hear, be heard, and/or speak. Its severity can range from mild to profound.

Some types of communication disorders might be:

  • Hearing disorder

  • Language disorder

  • Speech disorder

  • Central Auditory Processing disorder

A communication disorder can impact an individual's academic performance, social relationships, independent living, work and cause confusion, frustration, and even depression. And that's why raising public awareness around communication health is of such importance.

How can Communications Works and YOU help?

Each May, Communication Works joins ASHA in celebrating this annual opportunity to promote public awareness about communication disorders. We work to highlight the importance of early detection and intervention in treating communication disorders and hearing health.

During Better Hearing and Speech Month, we invite you to join us in spreading the word about communication and hearing protection because early intervention and support can really make a difference.

And to help you do just that, we have developed some free educational resources that we will be sharing with you throughout the month of May.

The first resource that we want to equip you with is a full PowerPoint that we created for you to share with teachers, parents, and educators.

➡️ You can download the presentation HERE. ⬅️

It contains tons of useful information about BHSM, communication disorders, and the importance of early intervention.

Please feel free to use, modify and share this presentation so that we can create a ripple effect and empower others to focus on the importance of speech, language, hearing, and communication.

Anyone can celebrate Better Hearing and Speech Month, so we encourage you to take a few minutes to share with your friends, family, and loved ones the resources we will share with you. And please follow along on social media, we are excited to provide more resources during the month and more people can become part of the change.
