About the Training
The first aspect of ASHA’s guidance with regard to 'cultural competence' includes an awareness of one’s own culture and one’s thought process. This first step is often missed, or not sufficiently addressed. Frequently as clinicians, we seek to understand the “other”, without an emphasis on our own lens and biases. We will spend time together looking inward and having a discussion on both shared and divergent experiences and leave with some shared definitions and recognition of where we are with regard to cultural diversity.
