The Incredible Power of Gratitude- Inspiring Kids to Give Thanks

During the holidays, we were reminded of the importance of giving thanks.  However, gratitude is an attitude we need to practice daily. Gratitude is a powerful emotion that can change the way we see the world and those around us. It helps us shift our focus and change our mental attitudes.Teaching our kids the power of gratitude can help them emotionally and intellectually to have a more optimistic outlook about themselves and others. It’s a fact that when we feel loved and appreciated, we are more confident and more prepared to take on the world. Here are some great activities to help kids be gracious all year long.

  1. Draw, paint or take a picture of your favorite people and/or things. Friends, family, pets or even your bicycle- whatever it is that makes you happy, express it. Hang your creations around the house or give a picture to someone you love.

  2. Journal – Parents can help kids write down what they are thankful for and add a drawing or picture that is cut out of magazines. This activity not only emphasizes writing skills, but helps kids focus and record the positive events of their lives.

  3. Gratitude Rocks or Charms – Spread the magic of gratitude by becoming involved in a fun craft project. Find some rocks or other homemade trinkets (be as creative as you want to be) and write one word on each rock or trinket that describes things you’re thankful for. Place the charms around the house, in the car, in backpacks, anywhere you want.

  4. Name five positive things about your day. You can do it on the way to school, before bed, at the dinner table or anywhere you like. Make sure that you also have everyone in the family name 5 things they are grateful for, as well.

The world is filled with things that can get us down. Teaching our children the power of gratitude will help them to take on each and every day with a smile, knowing how lucky they truly are.
